Though Mac McCaughan has muckle to keep him fussy -- playing in Superchunk, managing the successful Merge Records -- he likewise spends time written text as Portastatic. With a variable batting order, the side-project has recorded two albums and respective singles since 1993, when Tom Sharpling of 18 Wheeler Records asked McCaughan to button some of his lo-fi, four-track recordings; he obliged with the singles "Sandals with White Socks" and "Freshman." Then in 1994, McCaughan released an intact Portastatic album, I Hope Your Heart Is Not Brittle. The radical followed with the Scrapbook EP and a indorsement album, Irksome Note from a Sinking Ship. Nature of a Sap appeared in 1997. 2000's EP De Mel, De Melao paid royal court to classical Brazilian artists like Caetano Veloso and Arnaldo Baptista. In 2001, McCaughan returned with Looking for Leonard, the score to a film written and directed by Superchunk fans Matt Bissonette and Steven Clark. The uncut Summer of the Shark was released in 2003, only non before some other circumscribed edition undivided (2002's The Perfect Little Door).

Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose Loathed Each Other

Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose hated each other so very much they couldn't even plain to be in the same room together, a new book claims.

Music business promoter Danny Goldberg, who was previously vice president of Led Zeppelin's Swan Song Records, speaks about the pair in his new book 'Bumping Into Geniuses' which hits the shelves this September.

Goldberg says that when Rose requested to meet the Nirvana frontman after a prove, Cobain slipped away. He writes: "Rose had the kind of macho rock persona that Kurt detested."

The loathing obviously also counterpane to their partners Courtney Love and Stephanie Seymour. After a war of words between the two, Rose allegedly told Cobain: "Shut your bitch up or I'll knock her to the pavement."

The writer, who says he witnessed these events first hand, said that Nirvana even turned low the chance to join the moneymaking Metallica / Guns N Roses articulation tour due to his loathing for Rose.

Glasvegas - 'The Best New Band in Britain' (NME) - Ready for First-Ever North American Concert Tour

Glasvegas US Debut Tour To Include Headline Performances & Radio City
Music Hall Gig with Echo & the Bunnymen

NEW YORK, Aug. 18 -- Recently signed to Columbia Records,
the newly rising UK rock ensemble Glasvegas, proclaimed as "The Best New
Band in Britain" by the NME, will set in motion its first-ever North American tour
this fall with a series of headline clubland performances. Glasvegas receive
been personally selected by Ian McCulloch to straight support his band Echo
& The Bunnymen when they play the legendary Radio City Music Hall on
October 1 (please see total itinerary following).

Glasvegas -- 1st US Concert Tour

9/29/08 Boston, MA Great Scott (headline)
9/30/08 Philadelphia, PA North Star Bar (headline)
10/1/08 New York, NY Radio City Music Hall (w/Echo &
the Bunnymen)
10/2/08 Baltimore, MD Ottobar (headline)
10/3/08 Washington DC Rock 'n' Roll Hotel (headline)
10/4/08 New York, NY Mercury Lounge (headline)
Glasvegas' upcoming fall mini-tour of the states marks the group's
low gear US concert appearances since forming in Glasgow, Scotland in early
2006. An early Glasvegas performance at Glasgow's mythic King Tut's Wah Wah
Hut (a 300 capacity hall renowned passim the UK as a new talent
showcase and prescient innkeeper to shows by then-emerging artists like Oasis,
Radiohead, Beck, Travis and others) caught the attention of British music
mogul and tastemaker Alan McGee, who heralded Glasvegas as "The most
exciting thing I've heard since Jesus and Mary Chain." McGee's "Death Disco
TV" was the first boob tube outlet to broadcast Glasvegas.

Glasvegas released its offset DIY unmarried, "Go Square Go!," on October
30, 2006. The group's 2007 follow-up single, the limited edition 7"
"Daddy's Gone" was voted the #2 Single of the Year by the NME. Shortly
after releasing the band's third gear limited edition single, "It's My Own
Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry," on Valentine's Day, 2008, Glasvegas took
home the Philip Hall Radar Award (a prestigious unexampled band pillage voted on by
the NME staff) at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2008.

Glasvegas came in at #4 on the BBC News Sound of 2008 Top 10 poll of
the UK's brightest new acts as selected by approximately cl of UK-based
music writers, editors and broadcasters. According to the BBC, "Glasvegas
draw on rockabilly and pop from the fifties and '60s, using a backdrop of
brooding guitars to make their own wall of sound, a bit like the Jesus
and Mary Chain playing the Grease soundtrack."

Glasvegas has spent much of 2008 building a reputation as one of the
UK's top live bands. The group's concert dates in Scotland sold-out in
under a week and the UK music press lathered praises on Glasvegas for the
group's performances at a number of high profile festivals including SRO
shows at Glastonbury and T In The Park.

The songs of Glasvegas have been played near 800,000 times on the
group's MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/glasvegas) where the Glasvegas
profile has been viewed close to 900,000 times.

The members of Glasvegas -- James Allan (vocals, round guitar), Rab
Allan (lead guitar, backing vocals), Paul Donoghue (bass guitar, backing
vocals) and Caroline McKay (drums) -- were in America earlier this year
recording the band's self-titled debut album at Brooklyn Recording Studios
with production by Glasvegas frontman James Allan and Rich Costey
(Interpol, Muse, Franz Ferdinand, Mew). The album premieres new recordings
of the group's early singles "Daddy's Gone" and "It's My Own Cheating Heart
That Makes Me Cry," as well as new songs including "Geraldine," the debut
single from the album. Released in the UK on June 16, "Geraldine" reached
#16 on the UK charts and #1 on the NME singles chart.

Glasvegas, one of the year's most heavy anticipated UK album debuts,
is slated for stateside release on Columbia Records in early 2009.

Ferrell a huge hit during UCD appearance

Top Hollywood star Will Ferrell last night appeared in University College Dublin to accept a prestigious award in front of 1,500 students.
The 40-year-old star of 'Anchorman' was dressed in the full Irish rugby kit as he accepted the James Joyce Award from the Literary and Historical Society for his outstanding contribution to comedic acting.
Ferrell had a packed O'Reilly Hall in stitches throughout his 40- minute speech where he joked: "As I look out at this crowd, I see the future of Ireland, the future of Europe. And let's face it, the future looks pretty bleak."
The star also spoke about his two-week trip of Ireland with his brother Patrick and father Roylee, whose family hail from Co Longford.
He said: "The trip has been a bit of craic and I'm not talking about talk and laughter, I'm actually talking about crack cocaine."
During his holiday Ferrell travelled to Galway, Mayo, Belfast, Bushmills, Cork, Waterford and Longford. He joked: "The photos are all over Bebo if you need proof."
Ferrell added: "I'm so committed to my Irish roots that I intend to continue wearing this outfit (rugby kit) upon my return to the US. I will also continue to drive on the left-hand side of the road.
"Will it be dangerous? Yes. Is it illegal? Highly. But that's just how committed I am."
His speech also touched on what he believes are his similarities to James Joyce; Westlife and a dig at UCD's rival Trinity College Dublin.
Generating huge applause he said: "The truth of the matter is those guys are going to be working for you."
The star, who commands $20m a movie, joins other public figures honoured by the L&H, including United Nations weapons inspector Hans Blix, academic Noam Chomsky and former South African president FW De Klerk.
Ferrell told the L&H: "I'm truly honoured to be in the same company as previous recipients".

Beatles - Best Hopes For Mccartney Reunion

THE BEATLES original drummer PETE BEST hopes to reunite with his former bandmate PAUL MCCARTNEY - as he hasn't seen the star for over 40 years.

The 66-year-old musician was part of the Fab Four from 1960 to 1962, before Ringo Starr was drafted into the band to take his place.

Best insists he was good friends with the rest of the band before his departure - and hopes that he and MCCartney will one day be able to revive their relationship.

He says, "I would like to see Paul one more time in my life, just to catch up. Talk about our kids and grandkids, compare notes on where we've been and where we're going.

"It was Paul who actually talked the others into letting me into the band because he thought I was a good fit - and they couldn't find another decent drummer at the time.

"You know, as old friends go, people move in their own directions and you lose touch. We were kids back when we really hung out."

Tearful Day-Lewis pays tribute to Ledger

Daniel Day-Lewis paid an emotional tribute to late actor Heath Ledger during an appearance on the 'Oprah Winfrey Show' yesterday.
The actor's eyes filled with tears as he spoke, via satellite, of his regret on learning of Ledger's sudden death on Tuesday.
Day-Lewis, who was on the show to discuss his Oscar nomination for 'There Will Be blood', said he felt "strange" talking about anything else.
"There isn't anything to say other than to express one's regret to his family and his friends and to say from the bottom of one's heart...that I'm sorry for their trouble."
The actor continued: "I didn't know him. I have a strong impression I would have liked him very much, as a person, if I had."
He added: "I had already marvelled at some of his work. And looked forward to the work he would do in the future."
Day-Lewis prayed Ledger's loved ones would be left alone to grieve, saying: "This is going to be something they are going to be living with for the rest of their lives."
